Judas and the Black Messiah

Judas and the Black Messiah ★★★★

2021 Cinema Ranked

This is an angry, enlightening film about the life of Fred Hampton.

Daniel Kaluuya absolutely ROARS in this and is gonna deservedly take home an Oscar. His and Lakeith Stanfield's under-appreciated performances are really what elevate this to some powerful heights. Shaka King's direction is also really great along with the cinematography.

I do wish it was maybe a little more in-depth and complex, and I think Stanfield lends O'Neal a whole lot more complexity than he's written with. Kaluuya is no doubt the star but I just wish more people were talking about Stanfield because he's just as good and deserves more widespread recognition. Jesse Plemons and Dominique Fishback and the rest of the ensemble shine as well.

Keen to see this again, loved it and wish it was making a bigger splash this awards season.
