Trouble Every Day

Trouble Every Day ★★★★½

Between this and The Piano Teacher, 2001 was an enormous year for French people doing some absolute freak shit on the floor of a locker room. Vile stuff here, a twisted mix of vampire mythos and New French Extremity that excises the romanticism from the genre and leaves only the carnality. Like other Denis/Godard collaborations, it's visually beautiful, almost hypnotic, but it also reminds me a lot of Don't Look Now with its creative edit and the way it lingers on images of sexual intimacy, isolation, and gloomy urban Europe.
