This was a consistently fun movie, but I didn’t think it was anywhere close to being as good as its predecessor. The only thing it had that the original film didn’t was that it was so much darker than I expected it to be.
It was nice to see Indiana Jones kick some ass again. You come to these movies for the action and the story, and it succeeds there, so it is certainly worth being a solid 3 star flick. However, there were certain things that drag this down for me personally.
For one thing, the lead female character got on my nerves a lot throughout the film. It wasn’t just her screaming, but it was the way she screamed that bugged me. It felt so unnatural. Also, the thing I consider problematic is how certain cultures are portrayed, especially the Indians. They were portrayed in a way that was stereotypical and possibly racist. It looked like the writers assumed that they eat snakes and other animals you don’t usually see get consumed. Them assuming things about their cultural heritage makes this a film that hasn’t aged too well. It’s a decent watch with some things that work and others that rub off on me as clunky.
