Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond

Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond ★★★

It's clear that the initial behind the scenes footage was created so Jim Carrey could go another metatextual level deeper into his dive into Kaufman's life by making the political nature of "going method" a prank in of itself. This might have been cool on a dvd feature, but is kind of trite for a retrospective nearly 20 years later. Luckily, about halfway through, this film drops that facade. The documentary eventually becomes about Carrey's creative process and philosophical outlook through the lens of Kaufman's legacy. That's a much cooler idea and luckily this pulls that off, but there was some level of artistic consistency that was missing here. It's good and maybe I'm being too judgmental though.
