Zach Gilbert’s review published on Letterboxd:
Revisited this after reading about the many parallels some have drawn between Phoenix’s portrayal of Arthur Fleck and his performance as Freddie Quell here. Still feels a tad too emotionally impenetrable for me sadly, but Phoenix, Adams, and especially Hoffman are absolutely stellar and more than deserving of their Academy Award nominations.
As with a fair amount of PTA’s films, this is one I admire more than adore, but I can definitely see why others absolutely revere it. There Will Be Blood remains my personal favorite.
