A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master

A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master ★★★½

There’s plenty of inventive nonsense in THE DREAM MASTER, and it features one of the gnarliest kills in the entire franchise. I’ve always been grossed out by the cockroach death, but I was really stunned on this viewing by the fact that they somehow managed to get this moment past the MPAA.

Narratively the writers were clearly grasping at straws in order to keep Freddy coming back for more. Unlike Jason who just has to find some teens stupid enough to go to/live near Camp Crystal Lake and then machete them real good, by design Freddy’s MO is much more specific. While Alice is a fantastic final girl and really helps elevate the film, the fact that each death is dependent on her drawing in one of friends into her nightmares for Freddy to torment becomes incredibly repetitive.

As a kid, things like structure and logic weren’t something I concerned myself with. Thankfully, there’s enough batshit imagination (the souls pizza always gets me!) that I can easily overlook the film’s shortcomings.

Now it’s time revisit THE DREAM CHILD which I know is not fondly looked upon. I’ve always been a big fan of that entry but haven’t seen it in years. We’ll see how it holds up.
