A bad screenwriter kind of movie. Not altogether awful but every time it gets going it’s undercut by cheap dramatic tricks. Lots of importance placed on the “endgame” as a metaphor while clearly not having any idea what a chess endgame is. Most of the chess metaphors are ridiculous, although as an obsessed chess player I have found meaning in a few ridiculous chess metaphors before so I can forgive some of it.

I’ve certainly seen worse movies with my kids. Lots of booby traps and such. Quick sand, etc.

De Seta understood that one of the great pleasures of cinema is watching people struggle and labour, then sit down and eat some food. Huddled around a fire cooking as the sun goes down: the perfect climax to any movie.

“Cool huh? These are my tattoos.”
Might be my favourite Apichatpong Weerasethakul film. It’s curious, political, defiantly playful, and conjures such a powerful, unique beauty in mere minutes. The ending gives me chills every time.
