Permanent Vacation

Permanent Vacation ★★

Permanent Vacation was somewhat impressive for a no-budget debut, but I think Jarmusch’s typical directionless approach didn’t do it any favours. Existential ennui is key to what makes his best films so profound in their mundanity, and with Permanent Vacation it just feels like an idea floating around, going nowhere in particular, never blossoming into something particularly interesting or cohesive. There are bright moments that are deserving of a better film, but it never comes together as a whole. My expectations were low so I’m content with how content this movie is with its lack of direction, and it works as a neat metaphor for Jarmusch, aimlessly working his way through life and eventually finding his stride.
