Kane Vallance’s review published on Letterboxd:
You know what, this MCU rewatch is really getting me to come to and love some of these movies, and this revisit of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 is no exception. I used to find the humour and pacing pretty mixed, and that never allowed the film to go above 4 stars for me. Boy was I wrong.
Right off the bat it’s clear that the visuals (in both effects and cinematography) have improved a fair bit. The effects are much more colourful, and it makes the solid cinematography such a treat to look at throughout the entire movie! I just love colourful movies so much!
Pratt and Cooper return with more phenomenal performances and deliver their lines excellently, but Drax yet again got the most laughs out of my mum and I. Saldana is still an absolute badass as Gamora (I still hate Nebula though) and Michael Rooker as the much more loveable Yondu (who made my mum bawl her eyes out with the ending of this film) is even better. We’re introduced to Kurt Russel’s Ego too, and though I don’t think he’s a great character, he allowed for some nice character work for Peter and did a solid job as a passable villain.
Speaking of that ending (and this film in general really) though, I think this film was ten times more emotional than the first one, and almost had me crying at you know who’s death. Peter’s connection to Ego is so sweet and it makes the (somewhat predictable) twist hit much harder. The third act and action in general kick some major ass too!!
Mum gave this another 10/10, she said these two movies are easily her favourites in the MCU.
Oh and Baby Groot is the most adorable thing in this franchise and I love him more than I love myself. Plus his opening one take is literal fucking art and you will never change my mind.
You know what screw it I like this more than the first.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is at least on the same level as the original movie, with more emotion, perfectly sillier humour, and more colourful cinematography, all aided by fantastic special effects and another killer soundtrack!
I’m Mary Poppins, Yall!
