using this to talk about the show (s1):

man, this show is of ridiculous quality. this feels like an 8 hour crime drama/thriller film, if you enjoy films like “Memories Of Murder” by Bong-Joon-Ho and “Prisoners” by Dennis Villenevue then definitely tune into True Detective, it’s dark, gritty, tense, funny, thrilling and basically any other adjectives you could think of. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson deliver two of the greatest TV performances ever, and along with the phenomenal writing it…

one of the most profound and beautiful experiences i’ve ever had with a piece of art. consequential on its looks at nature, faith and the human spirit, and how all 3 of those things intertwine in each person. Terrance Malick manages to portray the hypocrisy’s and wrongdoings in parenthood & the effect it has on the child all in a context greater than ourselves. what is our purpose here? to love, to succeed? these are questions that can never be answered, but they can be challenged and portrayed in beautiful ways just as the Tree Of Life manages to do.

tad longer than it needs to be and loses quality in the second act but that 3rd act & ending was brilliant, decent experience overall

malicks return to cinema was a stunning meditation on mortality, morality and faith. potentially his most narrative driven film i have seen so far with exception to badlands, whilst maintaining his visual poetry that he is so renowned for leading to one of the most unique looks on war i have ever seen.

to lose yourself is a fate worse than death, to allow the horrors around you to corrupt the things you stand for and believe in, is this…

hypnotic. i found myself getting lost in this world due to the unsurprisingly beautiful visuals and score by ennio morricone. malick once again intertwines nature and humanity in the way no other director can, our characters surroundings destroyed by human temptation and lust. finding yourself in awe at such a simple story is something i’m getting used to with malick films, but very rarely find myself this way with any other director out there, very quickly rising in my ranks. an auteur if ever there was one.
