Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ★★★★

“In times of hardship, just remember: We. Are. Groot”

A problem with the tone in most MCU movies is that they try to build a serious aura, pretend to be something with gravitas and darkness only to take the edge of it with distracting jokes. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 does the exact opposite. Right from the opening laidback Electric Light Orchestrated tentacle-battle, the film has a joyous tone and aura which it never once is ashamed of. So as James Gunn introduces more serious emotions to that lightweight atmosphere, it brings a new depths to the film and makes it easy to buy into the darkness without losing the core of the film.

More than just balancing tones, the film is on a perfect level between pure visual spectacle and having thought-out ideas behind all its colors, shapes and designs. Through small means, the film builds a grand sense of a huge galaxy and its topped with entertaining action helping the film to truly stick out from the Marvel formula. With a superb pace, knowing just when to slow down and let us care about the threads woven between the characters, the tone makes this the brightest moment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far. Groot.
