Not gonna say anything about what’s in it cuz… but I’ll say I thought it was insanely well done and incredibly impressive.
I understand perfectly why an American audience hated this. It has all the ultra-specific idiosyncrasies of his Korean language work but translated not only to Western characters, but a Western backdrop and culture. It produces this crazy mixture of tones and styles which I found to be soooo much fun to watch. The spectacle of it, the always perverted pov. Just a rad weeeeeird film.
Watched in multiple sittings and this movie STILL fucked me up. Possibly my second favorite of 2019 (or is this technically a 2020 film?). Cinematography on another level. Patience, thoughtfulness, compassion. This is transcendent filmmaking with the lightest touch, the least manipulation. It's so unbelievably powerful. Will watch again very very soon. If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and WATCH IT IMMEDIATELY.
Also, MUBI is quickly becoming my favorite streaming platform.
This is a masterpiece. In time could even edge out Post Tenebras Lux. I think this officially makes Carlos Reygadas my favorite contemporary filmmaker.
