A film that demands to be seen on the biggest screen possible; huge landscapes and the surface of individual human faces are given the same level of loving, detailed exploration. Phoenix and Hoffman are truly exceptional; every indication you're watching an actor perform falls away as you're lost in the fine details of these characters. There's a lot to dig into here, about prophets and followers, the American dream, and how people make sense of their lives. But it's as rewarding to simply enjoy the film as a gorgeous tactile thing to luxuriate in.
