Prime Suspect 5: Errors of Judgement

    - really great 2-part instalment of the series!
    - i think the acting helps set this one apart
    - Tennison has an entirely new team, as she's now with a different police force -- not sure how realistic that is, but it doesn't matter

    - Julia Lane is great as DI Devanney -- ha ha, the fanny pack! -- she's not depicted as tough or ambitious, but solid and smart, with emotional motivations; she's given a bit of a backstory…

    - my initial reaction after watching this episode was to give it a 9/10, but then after some reflection, i thought maybe i had been too hasty -- it's definitely far better than the previous episode, but is it really a 9? is it really as good as The Lost Child? -- i very nearly downgraded this episode to an 8, but then i remembered Helen Mirren's staggering to meet her loyal and steady DI Richard Haskons

This is a wonderful film, deserving of its place on the Sight & Sound Top 250 (tied with several other films at #235). Plenty of plot in this one, a surprisingly strong love story, great performance from Soumitra Chatterjee, beautiful photography, the imagery, the editing; and the appearance of a little boy near the film's end is reminiscent of the beginnings of this trilogy. I'm sorry it is only a trilogy -- i'd love to know what happens next. I guess i'm a fan of Satyajit Ray, as i suspect everyone is who has seen these films.

I wonder if Andy Serkis considered Tod Slaughter's performance as Squire William Corder descending into monstrous hissing madness when developing his Gollum.
