Witches Cradle’s review published on Letterboxd:
I still find Eggers too turgid, too overbearing for me to love one of his movies (and I loved Dune), but I can't help but respect him as an adventurous and individual talent. Rare thing these days!
Fave thing here is how the most self-consciously modern tic on first glance is really the most arcane. The constant, digitally aided horizontal camera movement, propelled by Skarsgard moving side-on from event to event like an arcade fighter. A video gamey affect, like one of the big budget Game of Thrones episodes, but also a cinematic equivalent of the 2D, horizontal visual storytelling of Viking tapestries like Oseberg. When I saw the Bayeux tapestry, I was struck by how similar it is to a comic book, and therefore as very cinematic. Cool to see the link made on the big screen!
