Sam’s review published on Letterboxd:
Talked with Alice a lot about how Hollywoodized it is but Hollywoodized in a way that minimally detracts from the message and ultimately makes it more digestible. Also really cool that this is on HBO Max and hopefully lots and lots of people will see it!
Nice inclusion of the Agnes Varda footage in the beginning. Perfect casting all around, with the star personas of Lakeith S., Daniel K., and Jesse P. all being harnessed perfectly.
The word communist isn’t heard in the movie, no, but the words socialist, fascist, capitalist, and comrade all are, so in a way the c-word might as well be in there.
Would not be mad at all if Daniel Kaluuya won an Oscar for this especially with Leslie Odom Jr. likely walking away with best song. He could have won it for lead if not for Chadwick Boseman and the fact that the lead actor category is so tied to legacy.
