man cannot survive the modernizing, increasingly secular world they’ve created, religion is being stripped away from the individual by its inevitable corporatization , and thereby our faith in each other — the new messiah is a moody, lonely divorcee, from his eye rolls to the self-isolating tantrums, but it does bring a certain levity to the impending doom. the masochistic ending perfectly encapsulates hawke’s vanity and schrader’s depraved humor. grab ahold of the nearest body and don’t let go.
