Will Sloan’s review published on Letterboxd:
The best American Godzilla yet. Godzilla and Kong are two of the last real movie stars we have left, and it's great to see them back together. Unlike the previous couple of American 'zilla thrillas, this one actually looks good, with a lot of cool neon lights and clear, legible monster fighting. I enjoy the idea of Kong being sent to the centre of the earth and then floating through the air in zero-gravity. The plot is unbelievably stupid and the human stuff is complete drivel, which is fine by me. I'll be honest with you: I enjoy seeing a city completely trampled when it's made of cardboard, but start wincing a bit when it's an ultra-realistic CGI rendering of Hong Kong. Maybe this is my problem.
Even though this is a big-studio tentpole blockbuster, director Adam Wingard was still able to insert some of his familiar auteurist touches, notably in an extended and shockingly explicit sequence in which Godzilla jacks off on camera, unsimulated.
