Wilfred Lucas’s review published on Letterboxd:
Gina Prince-Bythewood's "The Woman King" is a fiery historical epic of female strength, motherhood, and community. Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedi, Lashana Lynch, John Boyega, Sheila Atim, and the rest of the cast deliver stellar performances and create compelling characters. This is an exquisitely rare action epic featuring women people of color and set in Africa that almost reaches "Gladiator" and "Ben-Hur" levels. It also does not conceal the contribution of Africans themselves in the dark history of slavery on African shores. Could it have gone more massive? Could the action choreography be more unique? Definitely, but for what it achieves with its engrossing storyline, it is still an absolute stunner.
