Stillwater ★★★½

Bizarrely sweet for a movie about a guy trying to solve the gruesome murder of his daughter’s ex-lover. Matt Damon is simultaneously pretty stereotypical and quietly brilliant as a trucker-hat Oklahoman, and Lilou Siauvaud gives one of the most natural, charming child performances in recent memory. The fish-out-of-water family dramedy works much better than the crime mystery, but the strange combination of them makes each side more engrossing, as they each give the protagonist something distinct to work toward and potentially lose.
