Kong: Skull Island

Kong: Skull Island ★★★½

This is my favorite Jurassic Park movie. Paper-thin characters, cliché-ridden dialogue, haphazard editing, and hit-or-miss CGI cannot stop me from loving this stupid monster movie. It really has its ups and downs, but the ups are really high. The cinematography and aesthetic are beautiful (despite the aforementioned CGI), and the color grading is ridiculously oversaturated in a wonderful way.

I honestly think this is a better portrayal of the futility of war than 1917 (which was pretty good!). If this was edited differently — take out a lot of the jokes, let the shots linger for longer without cutting to coverage, cut out the clunker of a first act, remove unnecessary expository dialogue, and get rid of the laughably on-the-nose music choices — it would be soooo much better. Most of the action is incredible, the cinematography looks great, there’s thematic weigh and nuance, and John C. Reilly is lovably unhinged.

Pretty weird that Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler) has a writing credit on this.
