A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master

A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master ★★

How’s this for a wet dream?

The Dream Master tries to capitalize on what worked in Dream Warriors, which led to a particularly fun first act with a lot of call backs. That allure faded pretty quickly after that, and while the overall concept was decent, the practical effects were the only thing stopping it from becoming an ultra-meta snooze fest.

The cockroach scene was particularly rad, and Robert Englund was fantastic as always. This one really made me appreciate Dream Warriors more, though. I want to go back and rate it higher, mostly because there will never be another slasher theme song that bops as hard as Dokken’s.

The 4th installment of the Nightmare franchise lays somewhere between awesome and hokey, not leaning far enough in either direction to be particularly memorable. It’s definitely not bad, but I won’t be aching to revisit it anytime soon.
