The Hidden Fortress

The Hidden Fortress ★★★★

Who knew that fuedal Japan could be so funny? There are long stretches of this film that feature the 2 sad clowns performing their schtick in over the top manners. I could have done with a bit less of that, but the action set pieces in this movie were briliant. It is not hard to see the influence that John Ford movies had on Kurasawa. Niether is it hard to see why were so many westerns were based on samuari films. I was thinking of Treasure on the Sierra Madre a lot while watching this.
