Logan ★★★½

Never been a fan of the X-Men franchise, but the great reviews for the last Wolverine film made me curious to see it. Anyhow, James Mangold’s helm in Logan is unexpectedly refreshing, and exciting. Logan is a superhero film that doesn’t feel like it’s a superhero film. It’s brutally violent, dark, and sometimes bleak—a very unusual tone for any superhero movie. Here, Wolverine is a depressive character and meets his daughter Laura—a more lethally badass superhero than her own father. Hugh Jackman nails his final appearance as Wolverine as he is nuanced, melancholic, but determined whenever he needs to be. Overall the film has amazing stunt pieces as expected, but it’s the unexpected brutality and tone that made Logan truly different from any X-Men films.
