The Curse of the Black Pearl is easily the greatest film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise (some would argue that its the only good one) and its still probably one of the most fun and watchable blockbusters ever made. That's pretty good for a film that was inspired by an amusement park ride.
Gore Verbinski offers a perfect mix of action, adventure and comedy with a little bit of fantasy and horror as well. The film is lengthy but the script is tight and I never get bored watching this film. The action and fight sequences, the characters, the set design and the costumes and makeup are all spot on and it feels like you truly are watching real pirates.
Obviously Johnny Depp is the standout as the funny but mysterious Jack Sparrow. Depp brings a great balance of cartoon like humor and great delivery. His rivalry with Geoffrey Rush's Barbossa as well as his complex relationship with Will Turner are still as fun to watch as they were in the theater in 2003. I'll likely get caught up on the following 3 films in order to prepare for Dead Men Tell No Tales but we all know that you can't beat the original.
