Villain’s review published on Letterboxd:
Kong: Skull Island seems to suffer from a lot of the same things that Godzilla did 3 years ago. The moments when Kong is on screen is when the film is at its best, but Kong's involvement in the film is fairly limited. I thought it was cool to see some of the other monsters on Skull Island but it gets to the point where the take away from Kong. He should be the star of the this movie.
I'm glad that there was some effort made to change the story up a bit but the character work is almost non-existent in this movie. I can't even say that any of the performers are really that good because they had so little to work with. Brie Larson is one of my favorite actresses but she is not good in this movie and its not really her fault. The dialogue she has to say is atrocious. John C. Reilly is by far the best character and they rely fairly heavily on him when he does appear. He's the only character that I cared about and he was the only person who could add any humor.
I still don't think that Kong: Skull Island was awful. It introduced some interesting creatures that we could possibly see down the line but I can't help but feel a little disappointed with both of these Monster Universe entries so far.
