    D.A.R.Y.L.

    ★★★

E.T. meets Pinocchio when Barret Oliver as the titular D.A.R.Y.L. flees his government facilities to acclimate himself amongst a real family in the ‘burbs much to the chagrin of the military. Appealing in its presentation of 80s tech yet, the film’s sprint to an expectedly sentimental ending is profound in how sloppy it is. In addition, while the robot being reunited with his human family is the natural conclusion, the burning question on whether Daryl finally learns what a hooker is is never revealed. What a digital letdown.

    The Possessed

With opening titles so good they’re shown twice, Demon Witch Child, in the grand tradition of Exorcist ripoffs, finds a little girl possessed by and morphing into a pint-sized elderly gypsy witch. Save for the projectile pea soup, we’re blessed with spinning heads and foul mouthed tirades from the youngster with the icing on the cake being baby sacrifices and testicle removals. Basically everything one would want from a third-rate work of the devil!

Returning to Woodsboro for another bloodbath of murders, Scream acknowledges where we’re at in the genre including, in true meta self, legacy sequels, toxic fandom and even knocking itself for recycling the original’s title. All of which may be stroking the pulse of today but, doesn’t necessarily make it self any more clever by doing so. While the newer teen characters are far more tolerable than last time, the legacy threads to bring Scream back to its roots are also…
