"Is that a monkey?"

Kong: Skull Island is 100% more entertaining than I thought the trailers suggested. Less dumb action and more shock value gory monster horror, certainly more than Godzilla. (Godzilla is the superior film, but Kong is more blockbuster-esque.) Speaking of which, the biggest narrative connections are the film's opening and (surprise!) post-credits scenes. Also, very very different from Jackson's story; if you're expecting an Odyssey-style epic adventure just rewatch the 2005 film. Longer review probably coming this weekend when I get a chance.
