Another Round

Another Round ★★★★

Is it bad that I now want a drink? (absolutely joking mom)

I'm glad that Another Round wasn't a preachy film that commented on what is 'right' and what is 'wrong'. It leaves morality at the door and takes you on a journey that lets you decide for yourself with no judgement whatsoever. That was my favorite part of the movie. It knows what it is and never swerves away from what it wants to be. It is a consistent, well paced, very interesting take on regular people who are easy to empathize with.

That being said, I found the film to become slightly more empty in the way it conveyed the characters' emotions. Their motivations began to blur and I was unable to perceive them as 3 dimensional. Often, I was confused as to what triggered each action and how we landed at a certain plot line. The movie just moved in a blur while blocking us out of the characters' minds. There was a loss in the connection between the characters and the story. Thus, I could not root for them or remotely care about them as much as I would have liked to. I'm not sure what exactly it is that made me feel that way because I do think that the acting was top-notch. Moreover, I have little complaints with the cinematography, and no complaints with any other technical aspect of the film. However, I think that while each component alone was incredible, together...they just don't work. Each component does not compliment the other leaving these awkward spaces where I wanted more. More from the actors, more from the screenplay. By the end of the film, I just wanted.. more. And I do not mean that in a positive way. I was left feeling sad because of how little I took away from the movie — any sort of lasting emotion or impression. This is not a forgettable movie by any means, but one that paints itself to look like one.

Despite all this, Another Round is a great film that is a wonderful viewing experience. I had so much fun watching this and I think that while it did lack heart, it was not devoid of it and had moments that made up for everything it lacked.
