There are a lot of things about this film that I find questionable—the score primarily, and I also question some framing decisions, mostly the means of exposition that Scorcese employs. I question the focus on Ernest Burkhart, but this was a question Scorcese answers along the way, though I completely understand other viewers’ lack of satisfaction with his answer.

I read Grann’s book of the same name and I’m just stunned at the power of the adaptation. Grann’s book is…

    2023 Criterion Challenge - Film 49 - 2000s

Bisexual cinema and don't let anyone say otherwise. No notes.

If you wanna laugh or get really mad take a look at the 1/2 star reviews of this written by intimacy-averse college students who were on their phones the whole movie.

Honey I Shrunk the Watchlist Challenge - Film 2 - Watch the movie that was added last

My first from this director. My instinct is to just say something snappy about good deeds getting punished but that doesn't get across how layered and excruciating the moral turpitude gets in this one. I wasn't prepared for how tense it is, it's like that old Hitchcock thing about the bomb under the table but instead of a bomb it's like a million little white lies. Very interesting.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

This is the 100th movie I've logged this year. Figures.

I really don't get it. Solid performances and a really great score, but the writing was just...ugh. It was anticlimactic and it felt too short. I'm beginning to think Paul Thomas Anderson is one of those directors that just doesn't understand how to write women. What is Emily Watson's character if not "woman who is attracted to main character"? Why does she like him? What do they have in common?…

The Christian Right's unhinged and useless scaremongering about child trafficking is an obvious smokescreen used to demonize their opponents and distance themselves from their blatant sexualization of children (see Matt Walsh, Matt Gaetz, Trump himself, and the neverending parade of groomer panic freaks who end up getting outed for crimes against young people). We know they don't give a shit about children because their entire worldview hurts them: their churches tacitly condone or underplay abuse, they seek to destroy public…
