There are a lot of things about this film that I find questionable—the score primarily, and I also question some framing decisions, mostly the means of exposition that Scorcese employs. My instinct is to just say something snappy about good deeds getting punished but that doesn't get across how layered and excruciating the moral turpitude gets in this one. I wasn't prepared for how tense it is, it's like that old Hitchcock thing about the bomb under the table but instead of a bomb it's like a million little white lies. Very interesting.
