In addition to some really beautifully-filmed and edited scenes--the alligator, the impromptu "Landslide" performance--X has nothing but finely-shaded performances and characters, including the antagonists, I couldn't help but love.

    Barbarian

    ★★★

The storytelling tricks Barbarian plays--starting new movies inside the first movie--feel a little too determinedly clever. Still, it has moments where I thought "okay, that's new and really messed up," an all-too rare experience when watching horror movies.

"Do you think God gives a damn about miniature donkeys, Colm?"

"I fear he doesn't. And I fear that's where it's all gone wrong."

  • The Empty Man

    The Empty Man

    ★★★½

Starts somewhat unpromisingly but hits its stride with a supremely well-constructed and very frightening scene about halfway through; it's worth watching for that scene alone.

It's a little overlong--the Tibetan opening scene's contribution to the rest of the film is exactly one visual metaphor, and removing that scene would have better focused the film on James Badge Dale's character--and the ending may or may not work for you, but it's certainly ambitious for a horror film.
