tfw you watch a movie and it creeps into you and leaves a weird kind of residue behind. haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. horror movies don’t give me nightmares anymore but this movie triggered a nightmare so awful that i woke up sweating at 3 am. shocked luca could do this to me (i admired the suspiria remake’s exploded ambition and total disregard for the source material without ever really loving the movie itself). we’ll never completely escape the past or what’s been done to us but we needn’t submit to either. we can face these aspects of ourselves with love

very few so-called competently-made films could claim to be as driven by nightmare logic as this... idk... transmission from the depths of psychic damage... waded so deep into the woods it can't find its way back besides which the woods have been shattered and put back together wrong... the mattress that convulses with blood... the pitch black basement that never ends... the narration that gives no sense of order whatsoever to the images... it's like every horror movie i've ever watched has led me to this point of total dislocation

tfw you only truly feel like yourself when you're wearing the reddest lipstick possible, redder even than the blood spatter on your clothing, and you're driving down an empty road singing along to "maniac" by michael sembello which the radio played the instant you started the car because this is your moment and your moment alone and for some reason these rare, cruelly brief instants of true embodiment are constantly interrupted by the petty desires other people and their unyielding…

terminal velocity trash cinema. jaume collete-serra has a hallucinatory command over interior spaces in this movie—you feel as if around every corner there must be a new lattice of doors and windows for esther to suddenly materialize in. it doesn't even need its sublimely ridiculous twist to function but happily it is there and it's sublime and ridiculous. if i were six years old when this movie came out the same mystery and intrigue would've surrounded it as did the good son but this has the added benefit of being a good movie

spent most of its runtime reaching desperately for something profound to say (while also attempting to be super self-aware about this drive to say something profound, which only made it more annoying) and only got as far as “true crime podcasts are bad”
