There Is No Such Thing As Freedom Of Speech (Op-Ed)
There is no such thing as Justice. There is no such thing as Freedom. There are no such things as Rights. These are Enlightenment Abstractions created and defended by Wizards Using Binding Spells: The Spells Of War, Of Imprisonment, Of Torture. These Spells Only Apply To Us, Never To The Wizards Who Enact Them. If you say you believe in the Right To Freedom Of Speech, what are you saying you believe in? Who is there to guarantee it? How will this mechanism occur? You would have to sue in a court of law that your Right To Freedom Of Speech has been denied by the same government which is there to theoretically restore it. Ask Chelsea Manning or Anwar Al-Awlaki if there is such thing as The Right To Freedom Of Speech. If you support The Right To Freedom Of Speech, you are supporting unlimited governmental power to grant or take away your ability to do and say what thou will. In an anarchy, there is no Right To The Freedom Of Speech. There is no Right To Anything. There are only actors and actions and reactions. This is how life actually is. Whether or not we choose to believe it, there is only what people do. Rights are an illusion. The Law is an illusion. There is what only what happens. All of us are responsible for what we do and say. This does not go away. It is not erased. We carry it in us and with us every day. The good that we do, the bad that we do. Our speech acts are like any other act. If we say or do something, we are liable for that. Other people will respond positively or negatively. Our actions have consequences. Please note that I am not making a 'might makes right' argument. In fact, NOTHING can make rights. Not a signed piece of paper, not a cabal of rich white male slave owning opportunists, no one and nothing. So I propose that we be as kind to each other as possible, to treat each other with deference and love, to speak civilly, not to bite our tongues and swallow anger, but to find a way to discuss these things in a manner which allows for real conversation. I am not telling anyone what to do. I can't. What I can say, is that if you call someone names or use slurs in your speech with people you know or don't know, someone eventually is going to get upset or worse, or whole communities and individuals won't trust what you have to say anymore, or take it seriously, or talk to you at all. This may or may not matter to you. What it comes down to, though, is that all of us, what we have is our words to represent our thoughts and our actions. To engage in any kind of community, we need our words to be taken seriously and carry weight. There is no protection. There is no force which can wipe your words away or render them harmless. That is a power that you have. Words are some of the oldest magick and the most powerful. Bless you, and Go In Peace. Love, nathaxn
