The Godfather

The Godfather

the 50th Anniversary rerelease and i friggin dozed off. screw me. i was very tired, but screw me. at any rate the transfer was great, loved getting this on the big screen especially on the level of sound. somebody needs to do a double-bill of The French Connection and this just as an American cinema “state of the union” for the 70s. such a seismic shift from the state of movies before, and a monumentally high bar that many would argue we still haven’t surpassed.

biggest takeaways this time were how funny this movie can be (why does the one bodyguard just repeat everything the other says?), just how many lines and moments from this are embedded in pop culture (you know, but then you start counting all the “look how they massacred my boy”s and the “offer he can’t refuse”s and the “sleeps with the fishes”s and the “don’t ask me about my business”s and the “take the cannoli”s and so on to where you’re hitting in the double digits just on quotes), and how much i hate everything they did to Diane Keaton’s hair
