Judas and the Black Messiah

Judas and the Black Messiah ★★★★

Most are talking about this film as a biopic, but it’s really a war film, where there’s no real winners, except for oppression, of course. The unapologetically crippling tone of this film boosts the reality of the Black Panther Party and the tragedy of Fred Hampton’s murder, so much that it does what all great movies do: makes you feel, to whatever extent you actually want to think about it.

Kaluuya and Stanfield are incredible, as we all know by now, but for those who never saw The Deuce were just introduced to the powerhouse that is Dominique Fishback, whose performance highlights just how incredible the acting is in this film. Couple that was brilliant cinematography and some interesting shot composition, and Judas is the best film of the year so far. I think the elements that drag 99% of biopics down also hold this one back a bit, but all in all a powerful work that should spark not just a reaction but further education.
