    Old Czech Legends

If you want to watch a film that makes you feel like a noble child, sat on the floor of a palace, watching with rapt attention the finest puppeteer that ever lived, this is the film to do it.

Trnka brings his figures to life with such grace and dignity, such solemn beauty, that it is difficult not to give your heart to them. This film feels archaic even in its function; I do not know a child that could…

i love so much when big black coats make negative space.. Bird ups the ante by adding gloves to that equation.. a man made up of the white stripe of his cuff peeking out of his sleeve and the love heart shaped blood stain on his chest.. crushingly emotional film, probably moreso on rewatch so i shall rewatch soon.. absolute all timer for clothes in movies, wes anderson eat your heart out.. many scenes that in retrospect are absolutely insane…

    Gold Diggers of 1933

There's a moment early on where Joan Blondell calls her roommates to confirm that there's a show being put on and they may have a chance of getting jobs, and those few seconds of her on the verge of desperate tears (not of excited hysteria but almost fear that she may be wrong) are so convincing I welled up a bit myself. Gold Diggers of 1933 is a comedy and a pretty funny one, but those moments of terrified, miserable desperation, culminating in that haunting final sequence are quite heavy. Bummer of a great film.

    King and Country

A group of soldiers in shiny rain capes beat the chest of a dead horse with shovels in order to force the rats eating its guts to crawl out of a slit in its side. They catch one of the rats, hold it in a little cage, and put it on trial- accused of biting one of their ears. The rat is found guilty and they stone it to death.

Mud, rain, blood, shit, piss... This film is permeated with…
