The Conjuring

The Conjuring ★★★½

This movie has some cliche elements, but uses them to the best of it's ability to make a truly suspenseful, terrifying movie.
The story is nothing we haven't seen before, but the presence of the Warrens keep the movie fresh enough to feel like it isn't totally rehashed.
The scares are extremely effective, using old school horror techniques, having the camera linger just long enough to build up suspense. The scares are also good at averting expectations. If you've ever seen a horror movie, you usually can tell exactly when and where a scare will happen. This movie knows this, and intentionally has scares that think you can predict, but usually happen entirely different than you expect. It also builds up towards jump scares, but then doesn't actually do them, so you never know when an actual scare will happen.
This movie may not be the most original horror film, but it certainly is scarier than most.
