The Wolverine

The Wolverine ★★★★

I didn't think much about it when I was younger, but I'm just now realizing how crazy it is that we got a big-budgeted Wolverine movie set in Japan. It feels like a comic book geek's wet dream, the kind that studio executives outright reject on the basis of its commercial unviability.

But lo and behold, it happened, and it's almost so surreal that just watching it has a kind of bewildering effect on you, in a good way. And it was a commercial success! Beyond its charming concept though, there's still a good character-driven film, with occasional bursts of hard-hitting action and a lot of heart.

Yeah, the third act's cartoony, and it seems I'm one of the very few people who enjoys it. This is not Logan, by any means - that's a much better film about pretty much the same thing. Nevertheless, I think it's much better than what people give it credit for, and it's still a blast.
