This classic is problematic for its white savior themes. However, it still has an important place in the messy history of American race relations. Amazingly made 1960's film with great child actors. I like many my age read the book in high school. I do think it should be replaced with more relevant modern works. I certainly expect my kids to be assigned newer more diversely written stories. despite these flaws I love this movie and consider it a must see classic.
Not free of problems. This classic has one of the biggest and most famous white savior narratives on film. The novel and the movie should be replaced with more modern story telling. However, that aside this movie is so well made for its time, and deserves its place in our messy history of american race relations. Still a must see in my mind for historical and cultural relevance and high quality 1960's film making. I read the book in high school, but I expect my kids to be assigned more relevant modern books.
This is no doubt an important movie in American history, and also it is plenty problematic viewed from a modern lens. I read the book as a teen in the 8o's and watched the movie for the romance, 30's era acting and pretty dresses. It's one of those movies one can watch with children to start conversations about white supremacy in American history. I would not present it today as merely a historical romance. I still want my kids to see it, but with lots of grains of salt.
