The Godfather

The Godfather ★★★★½

This is the Godfather film I wanted to see when we watched II the other night. Now, this is more like it! I tried to play a computer game and Hyunsook was off doing other things and yet we were both gripped by multiple scenes that we had to drop everything to see: the horse's head (followed by a recollection that it is based on a real incident where the horse was castrated), the attack on the Don, the hospital scene, the restaurant, Sicily, Sonny's death, the final accounting... Once again, a great movie.

I found myself going over and over again comparing I and III. Al Pacino is so much more powerful here with fewer words and more controlled acting. I compared Woltz screaming over the horse head in his bed with Pacino in III wailing over the loss of his daughter. Both are close enough and yet Woltz seems so believable in freaking out, whereas there is nothing in the Godfather character that prepares me for Pacino's overwrought wailing. Had Pacino merely given a Jonathan Frid (Barnabas Collins) stricken look, I would have melted and would have seen the pain of a man trying to keep everything under control losing it all.
