Messiah of Evil

Messiah of Evil ★★★★

This might be because I just watched it, but MESSIAH OF EVIL is essentially the West Coast answer to GOD TOLD ME TO, uh, if it were 3 years in advance. Both tell the story of weird messianic figures convincing large numbers of people to kill for them, although in MESSIAH it's more of a zombie horde/disease rather than individual mass murderers. And a very interesting choice to also have the indicator of having succumb to said cannibal disease be bleeding from the eyes. Despite some minor caveats about pacing and acting (not really a fan of the lead in this and her Donald Sutherland-impersonator counterpart), there are several brilliant set pieces scattered throughout, particularly the supermarket and movie theater sequences, which do an incredible job of conveying eerie, unsettling terror. Includes one of the weirdest and most unnerving sets in recent memory with a house full of disturbing and vivid murals, but why did the lead want to sleep in that room when there were plenty of bedrooms?

I'm not sure what the point of showing Walter Hill getting killed in that prologue was, but I'm a fan.
