Everything Everywhere All at Once

Everything Everywhere All at Once ★★★★★

The experience I love more than anything from movies is when I sit down not knowing what to expect, and a movie shows me something I've genuinely never seen before and does that while grabbing me and telling me a story that's genuinely engaging. Perhaps I've stared into the everything bagel for too long at this point, but it's been a while since a movie truly made me feel that way, since a film awakened my excitement about the possibilities of the medium. I've seen movies over the last few years that have done that for me, but it's always been by looking into the past, digging up the obscure corners of film. So to sit in a theater in 2022 and see a swing this big fills me with joy. So much has felt artistically dry, formally safe, creatively bankrupt, and unfunny lately. And if this movie is anything it's not those things.

Somehow this utterly ridiculous, goofy film is one of the greatest things I've seen in a long time. It's rare to see a film this joyful, heartful, free, fun, and profound. It's a film like this that makes me think, maybe I haven't seen everything in the everything bagel void just yet. And sitting with an audience that was laughing and seemed fully engaged with a film this far out there, gave me hope that there's still a lot of exciting ground ahead for movies that is yet to be paved.
