The Northman

The Northman ★★★

There is such brilliance here smothered by a rather workaday revenge plot.

If the film could spend less time playing out a somehow more convoluted Hamlet plot and just settle into its mystical bloodiness and trippy visuals it would be a far better film. Eggars’ single take shots of bloody rape and pillage and his attention to detail are very admirable  but it’s too long and if Hamlet procrastinated by soliloquising, Amleth procrastinates by taking part in physical tough mudders- if you came to watch Skarsgard perform muscular “Charlie work” then you’re in for a treat.

The form has such intelligence, it’s just a pity some ot the story bears don’t match it.
