this movie occupies such a specific place in my mind and memory, and i'm currently deep in a weird post-covid brain fog so allow me to take you on a little journey. back when it first came out, my brother had read about it in empire magazine and was really excited to see it, convinced it was going to be amazing, and so we went to see it as a family for his 18th birthday. even back then, before iโ€ฆ

on one hand i feel like i should be thinking critically about how much of a hard on this movie has for the military. but on the other hand i saw it in superscreen and the big plane really do go whoooooooosh and that's an undeniable thrill.

    beyond that it's a bit of a shambles honestly.โ€ฆ

    holy fuck.

there's an 8 minute sequence in the middle of this movie where godzilla lays waste to an entire chunk of tokyo which had me sitting completely still, eyes and mouth wide open in shock. i don't think i've ever seen large scale destruction look so impressively, terrifyingly realistic in another movie.

in general, the movie does an amazing job of balancing scenes of unbelievable destruction with long, drawn out scenes of bureaucratic back and forth over who takesโ€ฆ
