Graham’s review published on Letterboxd:
What an absolute blast. Nic Cage is at his hardcore maniacal best here, drifting around the city as a regular good-bad cop taking names, taking dope and taking advantage of his position all in the name of catching the crooks.
As a cop dealing with perpetual pain following a careless on-duty snafu, he finds himself on a spiral towards oblivion, with only his kind-hearted prostitute friend Frankie to keep him even.
There's plenty of crazy in the storyline here, although the wonderful casting across the board and brilliant performances from Cage and Eva Mendes balance this Werner Herzog brand of lunacy to deliver way beyond just a daft run-of-the-mill crime procedural.
