    The Hamburg Syndrome

    ★★★

Uneven German social satire from the rebellious 70's. During a city wide pandemic, that has enough similarities to our current sars covid-19 one, to make it feel eerie. A disjointed group of youths break the restrictions and travel together to the less restrictive countryside.

Genuine oddity, with a surreal, downbeat vibe. I watched it with what appeared to be fan made subs, so its bound to have been lost in translation somewhat.

Reminded me most of Cornel Wilde's 'No Blade…

    Willy's Wonderland

    ★½

Marionettes from a rundown kiddies fun diner wreck havoc on anyone whose unfortunate to drop in.

Substandard slasher, with a substandard Nicolas Cage performance. His pinball table dance in this deserves to become the new term for "jumping the shark", not that his career hadn't jumped it years ago. Don't be fooled by the thought of killer puppets, they're lame costumes that merely add a bit of colour.

Holy shit writer/director Craig William Macneill really makes the audience suffer with his budding Norman Bates-a-like story of 'The Boy'. It painfully shows the isolated world of 9 year old Ted Henley, whose brought up by his lone father in a remote roadside motel. Having no friends his own age or anyone to socialize with, outside of the rare short stay customers (including The Office's Rainn Wilson). Young Ted's left to run around in a near feral state, idling his…

    Pontypool

    ★★★★

Big city radio host Grant Mazzy is just finding his feet in his new position at Pontypool's humble radio station. During one of his nightly broadcasts, a strange hive mind inducing viral outbreak slowly takes a grip on the small towns population.

Amazingly sharp, psychological take on the tired zombie genre. Premise starts out a little like "The Fog"'s rural radio broadcaster, but the story takes its own unique path. It begins with a light slightly humorous tone, but slowly…
