Once Upon a Time in America

Once Upon a Time in America ★★★★½

An overlooked gangster film that got better and better the more I thought about it. Due to a tragic theatrical release history, it’s not nearly known as the iconic mafia films like The Godfather, Scarface and Goodfellas when it very well should be. Its a 4 hour film that contains some of the most captivating filmmaking that I’ve ever seen in a gangster film. There are multiple scenes in this film that gave me chills due to how well realized and mesmerizing the vision was. The score from Ennio Morricone also hits that sweet spot of melancholy throughout the entire film. The third act kind of loses some steam unfortunately and I didn’t find the execution to be as masterful as the previous acts. But it’s still a stunning film that is honestly the most relentless and cold blooded representation of gangster life that I’ve ever seen. Go into this knowing that the content can be quite graphic and ruthless at times. 9/10
