Ivan's Childhood

Ivan's Childhood ★★★★★

As an introduction to Tarkovsky's work this was pretty much perfect. A beautiful and haunting critique of masculinity. The composition in pretty much every shot of the film is simply staggering, it seems so effortless. The subplot involving the film's lone female character who isn't seen through a dream does feel a little disconnected, but it's thematically appropriate and an important piece of the film so it's forgivable. Can't wait to see more of the director's work.
