An understated masterpiece from Ridley Scott. Alien: Covenant is beautifully dismal and thoroughly crafted. It feels like an old-fashioned horror film, a classic house-of-horrors type space movie. It’s an effective hybrid of old-school thrills and modernity.
A bleak and gorgeous masterwork.
My primary critique of Christopher Nolan is that generally, he crafts his films solely with technical precision and abandons any desire for instilling any emotions within the viewer. That’s not to say his films can’t be emotional (here’s lookin’ at you, Interstellar), it is just clear that Nolan is more concerned with making intricate, sophisticated technical marvels and not with heart. Which is why his fanbase is primarily composed of pretentious, condescending killjoys (sorry).
