A graphic and explicit character study of a masochist. Definitely not for everyone. Enter with caution..
It starts as a police flick with murder mystery. Then it evolves into something more sinister and ends with one of the best plot twist in recent times.
I don’t even realize the long runtime (2.5 hours for a horror movie). The pacing, the build up, the climax are just brilliant. The shamans’ section are so realistic and would be familiar for most Asian viewers.
I looked up the director, and it turns out he directs ‘The Chaser’ as well. One of the best Korean thriller of all time, aside from Oldboy of course. Can’t wait to see his new works.
It’s interesting to see the comparison between India’s lower caste (who works lowly positions as servants) to rooster coops. After watching the movie, viewers will understand how hard it is to break the caste system.
The anti hero narrative is very engaging that I don’t realize 125 minutes has passed. As an Indonesian, I noticed some similarities with my country re the conducts of the masters i.e bribing politicians & police, oppressing the poor, getting rich quick through politics/crime, attitudes to servants etc. I guess that’s just how emerging/developing countries work. Survival of the fittest.
The movie delves in issues of elderly abuse and guardianship. Pike masterfully played a very despicable character. She managed to hook the viewers from start to finish. I was rooting for the downfall of this anti hero (villain?) character throughout. I must say, it’s a very entertaining movie.
